MARAST

The priory of Marast was founded in the 12th century. The place was uninhabited but became soon a hamlet. The influence of the priory spread fast on a large geographic area. Elegant and sober, the church, dedicated to Ste Marie Madeleine, is one of the rare Romanesque style buildings remaining in Haute-Saône. The barrel vault has the shape of a reversed hull. In the choir: beautiful carved tombstones. The monument was recently restored. The seconds naves which were destroyed in the 18th century were rebuilt. Every year, the church welcomes music groups and chorals for concerts organized by “Amis De Marast Association”. Near the church, you can also discover the paintings of Mathieu, in his nice art gallery showing Franc-Comtois landscapes.
