According to documents, the village of Gouhenans exists since the 12th century. The village (many ancient beautiful houses) spreads below the castle, dating back to the 15th century. In the past Gouhenans was an important centre for the seigneury. The church, rebuilt in 1680 has got a splendid statue of the Virgin with the holly child in polychrome wood. At the beginning of the 19th century the discovery of coal and salt resources announced the beginning of the period of industrial development in Gouhenans and the surrounding areas. Salt and chemical products were produced within the saltworks. Workers’ housing estates were built near the saltworks along with more comfortable homes (for the directors of the saltworks). The quarter also owned its own shops, including four cafés.
